Madinat Zayed Hospital, the largest hospital in Al Dhafra and one of the facilities of the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company “SEHA”, has achieved positive results in treating a 20-year-old patient from paraplegia, and improving her ability to walk, move and speak, at the hospital’s physical medicine and rehabilitation clinic.
The patient Yasmine was suffering from hemiplegia on the right side of the body, after suffering an internal hemorrhage in the brain, affecting her upper and lower extremities. Functional motor disability, represented by difficulty in walking and using hands, and in performing daily activities, in addition to imbalance during walking, tendency to fall, with speech and cognition disorders and poor concentration. Dr. Radwa Mohamed Mahmoud Awad Gabr, a specialist in physical medicine and rehabilitation at Madinat Zayed Hospital, who is supervising the patient’s treatment, said that as soon as Yasmine arrived at the hospital, a treatment plan was developed to suit her condition through physical therapy sessions and speech therapy twice a week in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. .
She explained that the goals of the treatment plan were to improve the muscular strength of the upper and lower extremities, increase endurance, functional capabilities and independence as much as possible, as the treating team began training the patient on balance, which was very effective after improving muscle strength, and the plan also included speech therapy to improve Speech and language skills, comprehension abilities and short-term memory training. Dr. Radwa indicated that the patient’s condition began to improve after several treatment sessions, as the strength of the muscles of the upper and lower extremities improved significantly, and she was able to walk without assistance, and her hand grip improved well, as well as pronunciation, as she spoke coherent words, and her memory witnessed Short term and her cognitive abilities also improved.
