Cardiff Museum Borrows Van Gogh’s Self-Portrait to Explore the Nature of Selfies

Is a self-portrait the original selfie? – asks the title of a new exhibition at the National Museum in Cardiff. For the occasion, the museum has secured one of the most famous self-portraits ever to be painted –  Vincent Van Gogh‘s Portrait of the Artist (1887) from Musée d’Orsay in Paris.

In the Drych ar yr Hunlun/Art of the Selfie exhibition, Van Gogh will be displayed alongside self-portraits of Rembrandt, Francis Bacon, and several Welsh artists like Bedwyr Williams and Anya Paintsil. And in the true spirit of the show, visitors will be allowed to take selfies inside the museum. In return, the French museum received La Parisienne (1874) by Pierre-Auguste Renoir for its Paris 1874: Inventing Impressionism show.
