London’s cable car will be renamed after a new sponsorship deal with a technology company, TfL has announced.

The cable car, which connects North Greenwich with the Royal Docks, has been without a permanent sponsor since the end of June, when the previous deal with airline Emirates expired.

From October, the cable car will be renamed IFS Cloud Cable Car for a minimum of two years after an agreement with the technology company IFS.

The funicular opened in 2012 ahead of the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games, with Emirates signing a 10-year sponsorship deal worth £36 million.

Josh Crompton, head of London Cable Car at TfL, said: “Over the past ten years we have seen the London Cable Car attract tens of millions of visitors and secure its place as a must visit UK attraction. The partnership with IFS is a great opportunity to build on the success of the most unique part of the London skyline.”

City Hall had initially predicted that the funicular would carry about “two million passengers a year” in 2011 before launching, but figures from TfL show that about 1.5 million passengers used the funicular in the year leading up to July 2022.

Tickets for a cable car ride, which takes about 10 minutes, start at £5 one way or £10 return. Cyclists can take the ride for free between Monday and Friday before 9.30 am.

IFS, the new cable car sponsor, is a “fast-growing global technology company” according to chief marketing officer Oliver Pilgerstorfer.

He said it was “wonderful” to have the company’s brand “intrinsically linked to a visible part of London’s transport system”.

As part of the sponsorship deal, IFS will complete a rebranding of the entire cable car, including the two stations on the Greenwich Peninsula and the Royal Docks, and will appear on Tube maps. The rebranding should be completed in October.
