teamLab Borderless is reopening on 9 February in its new home at Azabudai Hills, and tickets to the new digital art museum are on sale now.
Created by art collective teamLab, teamLab Borderless is a world of artworks without boundaries. The venue has relocated from Tokyo’s Odaiba waterfront to the Azabudai Hills urban village.
In the new space, artworks move out of rooms, communicate with other works, and sometimes merge with each other to form one borderless world.
teamLab Borderless is located within walking distance of several cultural venues, including the National Art Center, Mori Art Museum, and Suntory Museum of Art.
“We wanted to create a physical, spatial art that expands infinitely, where people walk around with intention; a physical art that becomes one with the body, changes through the presence of people; where the artwork world is continuous with the body,” said teamLab founder Toshiyuki Inoko. “That is the foundation of teamLab Borderless.”
The inaugural exhibition, named Bubble Universe, is an interactive installation containing lit-up and reflective spheres to provide a spectacular visual experience.
Another new exhibition at teamLab Borderless is titled Megalith Crystal Formation and is divided into two parts – Flowers and People and Black Waves.
In Flowers and People, guests will experience flowers growing, blossoming and then dying. Black Waves explores how all oceans are connected to each other.
teamLab Borderless first debuted in June 2018 in the Palette Town retail and entertainment complex. It welcomed 2.3 million visitors from more than 160 countries in its first year.
“Physical media is no longer the limit,” teamLab told blooloop. “Digital technology has made it possible for artworks to expand physically. Art created using digital technology can easily expand.”
