Al Ain: The College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine at the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) launched the Awareness Campaign ‘Food Waste Audit’ in collaboration with the Office of the Associate Provost for Research, the Abu Dhabi Waste Management Centre (Tadweer), and a number of regional Institutions.
Prof. Ahmed Murad, Associate Provost for Research, Dr. Mohammed Abdul Muhsen Al-Yafei, Assistant Dean of the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine, and other University staff members and students were present when the activities got underway.
According to Dr. Nuha Mustafa, the Professor who oversees the Campaign Program at the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine, the initiative is based on scientific studies to reduce food waste and consumption. The Awareness Campaign aims to educate students about the need to prevent food waste in schools and colleges.
Studies done at the food court revealed that more than 50 KG of various foods are thrown away daily between breakfast and lunch, which results in food and drink waste because it is evident that the students bought more food than they could possibly eat.
The Professor elaborated that, the Campaign aims to create a sustainable environment on campus and identify and recycle waste in sustainable environmental projects and transform the University campus into an environmentally friendly campus. Moreover, student research competitions and programs on this issue will be conducted that need awareness and a new culture in light of the development of society and the change in food habits.
