Underground Venues is to open a new space to host theatre and family shows as part of the 2024 Buxton Festival Fringe.

High Peak borough council has bought The Springs, a 39-year-old retail centre in the Derbyshire spa town. Underground will convert one of the shopping centre’s vacant units.

Venue manager and playwright Tom Crawshaw said, “the shopping centre has always been a hugely important centre of Buxton life but it can be about so much more than just shops. We’re incredibly excited to see the possibilities of a fringe theatre venue in such a key location and can’t wait to share it with the people of Buxton.”

Buxton Fringe chair Stephen Walker added, “Underground has been a cornerstone of Buxton Fringe for nearly 20 years and we’re delighted that it’s returning once more.

“Underground has provided opportunities for so many young people in Buxton to take their first steps in a career in the arts both on and off stage, bringing a wide range of acts to the town that wouldn’t have otherwise reached these parts. We look forward to seeing who they introduce to Buxton audiences this year.”

The deadline to enter Buxton Fringe is Sunday 14 April and the festival will run from Wednesday 3 until Sunday 21 July.
